Death row convict in Goalanda student murder case arrested by RAB

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Jamal Pattanadar, a death row convict in the murder case of South East University student Saiful Islam Ripon, from Narail, RAB said on Monday.

Jamal, 45, was arrested around 5:30pm on Sunday from the Bhabanipur area along Kalia Road under Narail Sadar Police Station in an operation conducted based on intelligence surveillance and a tip-off, with assistance from RAB-6. RAB-10 CPC-3 Faridpur Camp Commander Major Farhan Mahmud Moktada confirmed the arrest in a press release on Monday afternoon.

According to the case details, Ripon was shot dead in the head and chest in the Daulatdia Bazar area of Goalanda upazila around midnight on September 6, 2014. His friend Farid Sheikh was also injured in the shooting. Ripon's maternal uncle, Khalil Mondal, later filed a murder case with Goalanda Ghat Police Station naming five people and 8-10 unidentified individuals as accused.

On August 6, 2023, a Rajbari court sentenced Jamal Pattanadar to death and fined him Tk 50,000 in the case. The court acquitted 12 other accused. Jamal was absent when the verdict was delivered and had reportedly remained in India to evade arrest.

RAB said Jamal was arrested by the Crime Branch of Mumbai Police from the Kamathipura area of South Mumbai on August 10, 2025. After spending several months in an Indian jail, he was released on bail and returned to Bangladesh about two months ago.

After his return, RAB began monitoring him. According to RAB, intelligence and local sources later indicated that Jamal was preparing to flee to India again after allegedly becoming involved in another contract-killing operation. His whereabouts were subsequently identified through surveillance and information technology, leading to his arrest in Narail. RAB said cash and a mobile phone were recovered from him.

Major Farhan said the arrested convict had been handed over to the concerned police station. RAB also said Jamal is a named accused in two arms cases, two drug cases, one case involving preparation for robbery and one extortion case.
