Three remanded over teacher’s death after alleged snatching attempt

Three suspects have been remanded for five days each in a case over the death of a primary school head teacher who fell from an auto-rickshaw after alleged snatchers pulled her bag near the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Siddiq Azad passed the order on Monday after a hearing.

The accused are Md Poni alias Pyara Poni alias Poni Gazi, 28, Sentu Julian, 24, and Md Rakib Hossain, 24.

The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Md Zahidul Hasan Rial of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station, sought 10 days' remand for each accused to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident, identify other suspects and arrest the alleged masterminds. The court granted five days' remand each.

According to the case statement, the victim, Ranjila Parvin, 56, was the head teacher of Bagbari Government Primary School in Gabtali upazila of Bogura.

On August 29, she was travelling by auto-rickshaw with her husband, Md Abdul Matin, to visit an eye doctor when alleged snatchers on a motorcycle pulled her handbag near Gate No. 12 of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Manik Mia Avenue.

She fell onto the road and suffered severe head injuries. She was later taken to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital and subsequently declared dead while being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Her husband filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

RAB-2 arrested the three suspects from different parts of the capital on Sunday, according to the case details.
