5,000 US sailors head to pattaya, sex workers warned

Around 5,000 US sailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln are heading toward Pattaya, Thailand, after spending more than 200 days at sea, prompting local authorities to step up security and warn against illegal activities in the city’s nightlife districts.

The massive US warship is expected to arrive near Pattaya as the sailors seek rest and recreation following months of deployment. While local hotels, restaurants and businesses are anticipating a boost in tourism revenue, Thai authorities have increased police patrols around nightlife and beach areas amid concerns over disorder, sexual offences and the spread of diseases.

Pattaya’s hotel and shop owners are viewing the visit as a welcome economic boost after a prolonged period of weak business. The city’s mayor estimated that each sailor could spend between $30 and $91 a day, potentially injecting a significant amount of money into the local economy during the visit.

However, the arrival of thousands of US military personnel has also raised concerns over illegal sex work and public disorder. Prostitution is illegal under Thai law, although the nightlife industry in Pattaya operates relatively openly. Police have therefore intensified monitoring of entertainment venues and coastal areas, with around 50 people reportedly detained during recent operations.

The USS Abraham Lincoln began its deployment in November last year and later remained in the Middle East amid the conflict involving Israel, the United States and Iran. After more than 200 consecutive days at sea, the Pattaya stop is expected to provide sailors with an opportunity to rest and recover from the physical and psychological strain of the lengthy deployment.
