Teacher killed after being hit by battery-run auto in Kushtia

A former headteacher was killed after being hit by a battery-run auto-rickshaw while he was on his way to attend Jumma prayers in Mirpur upazila of Kushtia on Friday.


The deceased was identified as Abdul Latif Malitha, 65, son of late Saban Malitha of Khayerpur area. He was a former headteacher of Khayerpur Government Primary School.


The accident occurred around 1pm at Khayerpur Bazar on the Kushtia-Meherpur highway.


According to witnesses, Latif was riding a bicycle to Khayerpur Jame Mosque for Jumma prayers when a speeding battery-run auto-rickshaw hit him while he was crossing the road.


He fell onto the road and sustained serious injuries. Locals took him to Mirpur Upazila Health Complex, where an on-duty doctor declared him dead.


Mirpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Shahidul Islam said police were sent to the spot after receiving the information.


“Legal action will be taken if a complaint is filed,” he said.
