Asif Mahmud: ‘Give us a card that ensures gas and electricity at home’

National Citizens Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan has accused the government of failing to address the country’s worsening gas and electricity crisis, saying public suffering is increasing day by day.

“If there is any card that ensures gas and electricity at home, give us that card,” he said, addressing the government.

Asif Mahmud made the remarks at the concluding rally of the 11-party alliance’s Dhaka-Chattogram long march at Laldighi Maidan in Chattogram city on Saturday evening (September 5).

He said the country is going through a critical period and that the crisis, which people had expected to ease quickly, is instead deepening. “Under the current government, the crisis has become even more acute,” he said.

He further said people were once again being forced to cook with firewood, describing it as a regression from the digital age to the analogue era and warning that the country could eventually return to the “Stone Age” if the situation continues.

Criticising the government, the NCP leader said it had failed to address the core problems after assuming office and had not taken effective steps to resolve people’s basic needs. He also called for handing over the responsibility of running the country to representatives chosen by the people.

The 11-party alliance organised the long march with demands including implementation of the referendum verdict, trial of the July massacre, resolution of electricity, fuel, gas and fertiliser shortages, control of rising prices of essentials, an end to extortion and corruption, improvement of law and order, and an end to narrow partisan politics.
