BU students clash over dormitory door dispute

BARISHAL, Sept 5: Students from several departments at Barishal University (BU) clashed on Friday night over a dispute involving a door latch at a mess near the campus.

The dispute began on Thursday between Sociology student Saikat and Economics students Shovon and Azam after Saikat asked the senior students to put a latch on a door. 

Sociology students later alleged that students from the Economics and Chemistry departments locked some students inside. They said they reported the incident to the proctor but received no immediate solution.

The two sides met on Friday afternoon at a shop in the Chhatimtala area to resolve the dispute, but the meeting ended without results.

The confrontation intensified around 10 pm as students from the Chemistry and Soil, Water and Environment Science departments became involved. About 100 students were involved in the clashes, students said.

Sociology student Ashraful Islam alleged that the two sides had agreed to meet with five representatives each but said the Economics and Chemistry students attacked them before the meeting.
