ACC expands probe into ex-chief secretary Kaikaus

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided to expand its investigation into allegations of corruption, abuse of power and illegal wealth acquisition against former chief secretary Dr Ahmad Kaikaus and former Feni-1 MP Alauddin Ahmed Chowdhury Nasim.

The decision was taken on Monday based on intelligence reports, ACC Public Relations Officer Md Aktarul Islam said.

According to the ACC, allegations against Kaikaus include abuse of power, irregularities, corruption and acquisition of assets beyond known sources of income. The allegations against Nasim include land grabbing, recruitment and political post trading, embezzlement and laundering thousands of crores of taka abroad, as well as acquiring undisclosed assets in his and his family members’ names.

The commission decided to incorporate the new allegations into ongoing investigations against both men after reviewing intelligence reports and related information.

Kaikaus, who also served as power and energy secretary, is already under investigation over alleged irregularities in the power purchase agreement between the Bangladesh government and India’s Adani Power. The ACC is examining allegations that the deal bypassed the National Board of Revenue, resulting in around Tk 4,500 crore in lost customs duties and taxes.

The ACC said further legal action would be taken based on the findings of its investigation. The allegations have not been proven in court.
