A boat carrying goods worth around Tk1.5 crore sank in the Titas River in Akhaura, Brahmanbaria, on Monday morning. No one was injured.

The accident occurred near the Barabazar boat terminal in the municipal town around 6:30am.

Witnesses and local traders said the boat was carrying various goods from Jagatbazar in Brahmanbaria to Akhaura. While attempting to dock at the Barabazar terminal, it lost control amid strong currents and collided with a fishing boat before capsizing.

Most of the goods on board sank or floated away in the river, they said.

Lutfar Rahman Chowdhury, lessee of the Barabazar market, said the boat was carrying rice, lentils, onions, sugar and other goods belonging to traders from Sarakbazar and Barabazar.

Local traders claimed that the goods on the boat were worth more than Tk1.5 crore.

A trader, wishing to remain anonymous, said the boat had been overloaded with goods. The accident occurred because the boatman could not control it due to the strong current while trying to dock.
