Bangladesh currently needs around 88,909 doctors to meet the minimum international doctor-population ratio, but only 30,311 doctors are working in government hospitals, Health Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain told Parliament on Monday.

The minister said the country therefore has a shortage of 58,598 doctors against the estimated requirement.

He was replying to a written question during the question-and-answer session of Parliament, with Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad in the chair.

According to the minister, government hospitals have 41,806 approved posts for doctors, of which 11,495 are currently vacant. He said the number of doctors required nationwide and the number working in government healthcare facilities are not the same.

Citing a government-funded study, Sakhawat said Bangladesh needs around 88,909 doctors in 2026 to meet the World Health Organization’s minimum standard of 0.50 doctors per 1,000 people.

He said the government has taken steps to fill vacant posts and increase the number of doctors. A significant number of doctors have been recruited through the 44th and 48th special BCS examinations, while recruitment of assistant surgeons through the 45th, 46th, 47th and 50th BCS examinations is under way.

The government will gradually fill vacant posts and create new positions where necessary to ensure accessible and quality healthcare, the minister said.
