India knocks again for Bangladesh Hilsa ahead of Durga Puja

India has once again knocked on Bangladesh’s door for its prized hilsa, seeking permission to import the coveted fish ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja, with the Commerce Ministry now considering the request amid growing demand from Indian traders.

The Fish Importers Association of India has formally approached the Bangladesh government seeking permission to import and sell Bangladeshi hilsa during the Hindu festival.

The request has been sent separately to the Prime Minister’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Commerce, according to sources at the Commerce Ministry.

The ministry is taking the request positively, although no decision has yet been made on the quantity of hilsa that Bangladesh may allow to be exported.

At the same time, 18 Bangladeshi companies have applied for permission to export hilsa to India. The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is expected to send its recommendation to the Commerce Ministry on Wednesday for scrutiny of the applications.

Commerce Secretary Ataur Rahman Khan told reporters that his ministry had received letters from Indian traders, adding that the volume of hilsa to be exported would be determined after discussions with the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock.

Indian traders have sought permission earlier than usual this year, arguing that advance approval would help ensure a smooth supply of hilsa to the Indian market during Durga Puja.

In their letter, the traders said Bangladesh had exported an average of around 5,000 tonnes of hilsa to India annually since 1996, but regular exports were halted from 2012.

The Commerce Ministry is expected to take a final decision after receiving the Fisheries and Livestock Ministry’s assessment of the applications from Bangladeshi exporters.
