Natore sees surge in diarrhoea cases

A sudden surge in diarrhoea cases has put pressure on Natore General Hospital, with 106 patients admitted with diarrhoea symptoms in just 24 hours. With beds running short, some patients are being treated on the hospital floor.
Hospital sources said 106 patients were admitted between Wednesday morning and Thursday, including 59 men and 47 women and children. Many of the patients are from Kanai Khali, Kandivita, Chakramrampur, Patuapara, Ramaigachhi and Bara Harishpur areas of Natore municipality.
The sharp rise in admissions has put additional pressure on the hospital’s diarrhoea ward, forcing some patients to receive treatment on the floor due to a shortage of beds.
Patient Nazma Begum said she suddenly developed diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pain after eating on Wednesday morning. Later, her mother-in-law and sisters-in-law developed similar symptoms.
She said her family uses supplied water and suspected it could be linked to their illness.
Another patient, Rabiul Islam of Kanai Khali, said his diarrhoea initially appeared mild but later worsened, prompting him to seek hospital treatment. He said he saw many other people from his area receiving treatment for similar symptoms.
The health authorities have not yet identified the specific cause of the surge. They are also investigating whether patients from any particular area account for a disproportionately high number of cases.
Dr Mahabubur Rahman, resident medical officer of Natore General Hospital, said the hospital was prepared to handle the increased patient load and had sufficient supplies of medicines and saline.
Natore Civil Surgeon Dr Mohammad Mashiur Rahman said diarrhoea cases tend to increase somewhat during seasonal changes, but the number of patients was unusually high this year.
He said 516 diarrhoea patients had been admitted to Natore General Hospital over the past week, including 47 on Thursday alone.
The civil surgeon said additional saline was being procured to deal with the situation and that a fresh requisition would be sent to the relevant authorities on Saturday or Sunday.
