BPL fixing probe deepens, more names in sight

The investigation into corruption allegations surrounding the last Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) season is still ongoing, with more individuals potentially facing charges under the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) anti-corruption code, said BCB Anti-Corruption Unit chief Alex Marshall on Saturday (September 12).

Speaking at a press conference at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Marshall said several cases remain under investigation and further charges could be announced in the coming days.

“In recent weeks, we have publicly announced charges against seven people and declared one person an excluded person,” said Marshall, a former head of the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) anti-corruption unit.

Earlier this month, the BCB charged three individuals linked to the previous BPL season with breaches of its anti-corruption code. Five others had already been charged, while another individual was declared an ‘excluded person’, taking the number of publicly disclosed cases to eight.

“Some more cases are still under investigation. You may see further charges in the coming days,” Marshall said.

He also revealed that some of those already charged have admitted the allegations and sought to resolve their cases through an agreed sanction process, while others have yet to respond.

The latest three individuals were charged on September 1 and have only a few days left to respond, Marshall said. They can either admit the allegations and seek an agreed sanction or deny them and request a hearing before the Anti-Corruption Tribunal.
