Four killed in road mishaps in three districts

Four people were killed and 22 injured in separate road accidents in Jhenaidah District, Daulatpur Upazila of Kushtia District and Mymensingh District in two days.

JHENAIDAH: A cyclist was killed after his bicycle collided head-on with a motorcycle in the Bypass Bhutiyargati area of the town on Saturday morning.

Deceased Sirajul Islam Sardar, son of Abul Sardar of Bhutiyargati Village, was on his way to work as a construction labourer when the accident occurred in the Bhutiyargati area, according to local residents. Sirajul suffered critical injuries and was rushed to Jhenaidah 250-bed General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

The motorcycle rider also was injured and was receiving treatment at the hospital. He fled after learning of Sirajul’s death, residents said.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station (PS) Asaduzzaman confirmed the accident and said police had seized the motorcycle.

DAULATPUR, KUSHTIA: An Algamon (locally-modified three-wheeler) driver was killed when a speeding local bus collided with his banana-laden Algamon on the Kushtia-Meherpur road in the Khalisakundi Panchpirtala area in Daulatpur Upazila of the district on Friday afternoon.

Jahar Ali, 36, son of Ayub Ali of Sadarpur Village in Mirpur Upazila of the district, died on the spot after the bus, travelling towards Meherpur, lost control and slammed into the three-wheeler, according to local police and eyewitnesses. 

The crash destroyed the Algaon and injured about 20 passengers from both vehicles. Local residents rescued the injured and took them to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police said they would investigate the accident and take legal action based on their findings.

MYMENSINGH: Two people, including a woman, were killed and a 7-year-old boy was seriously injured in a head-on collision between a truck and a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw in the Muktagachha bypass area of the city on Friday morning.

The deceased were Sohag, 28, and Sonia Akter, 25, both from Fulbaria Upazila of the district. The injured boy, Sajid, 7, is Sonia’s son.

Mymensingh Medical College Hospital Police Outpost Sub-Inspector Abdul Bari said Sonia died on the spot. Sohag and Sajid were taken to the hospital in critical condition. Sohag died while undergoing treatment around 2 pm, while Sajid was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as his condition deteriorated.

Police said the CNG was travelling from Fulbaria toward Mymensingh when it collided head-on with the truck coming from the opposite direction.

Kotwali Model PS OC Shibirul Islam said legal action is underway.
