BSF firing kills two Bangladeshis, one injures

Two Bangladeshis were killed and another was injured after India’s Border Security Force (BSF) opened fire near the Chanderhat border area in Pirganj, Thakurgaon, on Saturday (September 12).

The injured Bangladeshi is undergoing treatment at a hospital in India, while the bodies of the deceased are being brought back through discussions between the border forces of the two countries.

The deceased were identified as Asadul Haque, son of Abdul Wazed of South Indrail village, and Mostakim, son of Ahed Ali of North Indrail village in Pirganj. The injured was identified as Shri Uda, son of Munsha Narayan, also from North Indrail.

According to local residents and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) sources, a BSF patrol team from the 63 Chokshivanand BSF camp in Uttar Dinajpur opened fire on three Bangladeshis near border pillar No. 333 under the jurisdiction of the Chanderhat BOP early Saturday.

The three were critically injured in the firing. BSF personnel later rescued them and took them to Kaliyaganj State General Hospital in India, where Asadul Haque and Mostakim died while undergoing treatment. Shri Uda remains under treatment at the hospital.

A representative of an Indian news outlet in Uttar Dinajpur, Radha Rani Haldar Thakur, said the three Bangladeshis were shot on allegations of attempting to cross into India illegally in the Raiganj subdivision area.

She said police in Kaliyaganj had informed her about the incident and that the border forces of the two countries were communicating over the handover of the bodies.

Meanwhile, a flag meeting between the BGB and BSF was held at the zero line of the Chanderhat border on Sunday afternoon following the incident.

Bairchuna Union Parishad member Mohammad Shahjahan Ali said both the deceased were residents of the area. He said locals learned about their deaths through Indian media and later informed the BGB.

Commander of 42 BGB Lieutenant Colonel Abdullah Al Moin said they had learned about the incident through various sources.
