Jamaat wants to depoliticise Bangladesh with AL: Rashed Khan

Jamaat-e-Islami wants to depoliticise Bangladesh by bringing the Awami League back into politics, Prime Minister’s Political Assistant Rashed Khan has alleged.

He made the remarks while responding to questions from journalists after a meeting on improving the quality of education at MK Secondary School in Jhenaidah Sadar on Sunday.

Rashed said BNP had not granted a general amnesty to the Awami League, but Jamaat had done so. Referring to a statement by Jamaat leader Abdullah Mohammad Taheri that the party would have no objection if the Awami League returned as a political party, he said such remarks had emboldened the Awami League to hold sudden processions.

He said Jamaat should cooperate with the government and work together for the reconstruction of the country. If that happened, he claimed, Awami League activists would not be seen on the streets. Instead, he alleged, the Awami League was using Jamaat’s long march as an opportunity to organise sudden processions.

Rashed said many of those who took part in a sudden procession in Gulshan had already been arrested. He urged Awami League leaders and activists not to “fall into Sheikh Hasina’s trap”, claiming that she would never return to Bangladesh.

He described the Awami League as a “dead body” and said the party had already been buried. He warned that the July-August 2024 mass killings would be brought to justice, saying Jamaat could grant an amnesty to the Awami League but the people of Bangladesh had not.

Rashed further alleged that if Jamaat tried to rehabilitate the Awami League or bring it back into politics, people would launch protests against both parties.

He accused Jamaat of having a history of making political alliances with its opponents, citing its role in the 1986 election, its movement with the Awami League against the BNP government in 1996, and its alleged attempts to benefit from and promote depoliticisation during the Fakhruddin-Moeenuddin caretaker government.

He alleged that Jamaat was again trying to depoliticise Bangladesh by joining hands with the Awami League, but said the party would not be able to halt the country’s political progress.

Rashed also said the government would take strict action against those who create artificial crises.

District BNP Vice-President and Sadar upazila BNP President Advocate Kamal Azad Pannu, District Jubo Dal President Imran Hossain and leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organisations were present.
