Asif Mahmud accuses ACC of ignoring AL-era corruption

National Citizens Party (NCP) spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan has accused the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) of ignoring corruption committed during the Awami League rule, while denying allegations that he laundered Tk 11,000 crore abroad.
Speaking at a press conference in Banglamotor, Dhaka, on Sunday, Asif said the ACC had not been reformed and was still being used in the same manner as before.
Regarding the allegation that Tk 11,000 crore had been laundered to Singapore and other countries, he questioned the varying figures cited in connection with the allegations.
He said figures of Tk 1.2 lakh crore, Tk 11,000 crore and Tk 2.76 crore had been mentioned at different times, and suggested that the government should first clarify the amount.
Asif also questioned the ACC's actions against him, saying the commission had targeted the BNP but had shown little interest in corruption during the Awami League period.
“How many Awami League people have been sued?” he asked.
On the case against him, Asif said he was the first political figure against whom a case had been filed and that he had already explained his position.
He said he had shown at a press briefing two days earlier that the investigation against him concerned a promotion made during the BNP government.
He alleged that further allegations were being brought against him after the initial allegation failed to produce results, adding that he was prepared to face them.
Regarding ACC reform, Asif said the cancellation of the ordinance for reforming the commission had made it clear to him that the ACC would continue to be used for the same purposes as in the past.
However, he said he did not yet know the specific details of the alleged Tk 11,000 crore money laundering and would be able to comment in detail after reviewing the matter.
