Government has sufficient fertiliser stock: state minister

The government has sufficient fertiliser in stock and there is no shortage in the country, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Yaser Khan Chowdhury said on Sunday.

He said the authorities must regularly monitor the distribution system to ensure farmers receive fertiliser properly and according to their needs.

The state minister made the remarks as the chief guest at a monthly law and order coordination meeting at the conference room of the Jamalpur deputy commissioner’s office. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Yousuf Ali chaired the meeting.

Yaser Khan said fertiliser must be supplied to farmers on time and any irregularities or attempts to create an artificial shortage must be prevented.

“There is no reason to be concerned about a fertiliser shortage as the government has kept sufficient stocks to maintain agricultural production and protect farmers’ interests,” he said.

On the law and order situation, he said necessary manpower and vehicles would be provided to law enforcement agencies in phases to strengthen their capacity.

He said drug abuse was one of the major causes of crime and a serious obstacle to development. He called for collective efforts to control drugs and instructed officials to consider forming grassroots committees to assist law enforcement agencies in combating drug abuse.

The meeting discussed the overall law and order situation in the district, drug control, strengthening the capacity of law enforcement agencies, and the supply and distribution of agricultural inputs, particularly fertiliser.

Local lawmakers Advocate Shah Md Wares Ali Mamun, A.E. Sultan Mahmud Babu, Md Faridul Kabir Talukder Shamim and Mostafizur Rahman Babul, Jamalpur District Council Administrator Sirajul Haque, Police Superintendent Mosa Farhana Yasmin and 35 BGB Battalion Commander Lieutenant Colonel Hasanur Rahman, among others, spoke at the meeting.
