Padma flooding leaves 40 villages underwater in Kushtia

Rising water in the Padma River has inundated 40 villages in Ramakrishnapur and Chilmari unions of Daulatpur upazila in Kushtia, leaving at least 60,000 people stranded.

Around 470 acres of cropland and major roads have also gone underwater. Classes at 30 educational institutions have been suspended to avoid accidents.

The flooding has caused severe shortages of dry food and safe drinking water. Continuous rain and water flowing downstream from upstream areas have submerged paddy, jute, banana and vegetable fields, damaging crops worth crores of taka.

Local teachers and Chilmari Union Parishad representatives said the suffering had intensified as relief had yet to reach the affected areas and livestock feed was in short supply.

However, the Water Development Board said the Padma was currently flowing 74 centimetres below the danger level and was expected to start receding within the next two days.
