BGB seizes cannabis, Indian syrup at Phulbari border

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members seized 15.5kg of Indian cannabis and 81 bottles of Indian contraband syrup in separate drives at the Phulbari border in Kurigram.

Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam, PSC, commanding officer of the Lalmonirhat-15 BGB Battalion, confirmed the matter on Friday afternoon.

"Acting on intelligence , patrol teams from Gangarhat and Balarhat Border Outposts conducted separate raids in Biddyabagish area of Phulbari upazila at 12:50 AM on September 17 and in Balatari area at 1:20 AM on September 18.'' said BGB.

Sensing the presence of BGB personnel, smugglers abandoned the contraband and fled into Indian territory. Later, BGB members searched the area and seized 15.5kg of Indian cannabis from Balarhat.

In another drive by the Gangarhat BOP in the same upazila, 81 bottles of Fairdeal syrup were seized.

The total seizure value of the drugs recovered in the three drives was estimated at Tk 1,26,250.

Lieutenant Colonel Mehedi Imam said intelligence surveillance and patrol activities have been intensified along the border to prevent smuggling and drug trafficking.

Such operations will continue to prevent drug trafficking and other illegal activities, he added.
