‘Sarbahara Group’ leader accused of leading Pabna trader’s murder

The Special Response Battalion (SRB) has arrested the alleged mastermind of the murder of a 55-year-old onion trader in Pabna, identifying him as a leader of a banned Sarbahara group.

Mohammad Rezaul Karim Pramanik, alias Bagha, was arrested from Madhabdi in Narsingdi on Thursday in a joint operation by SRB-11 and SRB-12.

SRB Legal and Media Wing Director Wing Commander M Z M Intekhab Chowdhury disclosed the details at a press conference at the SRB Media Centre in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka, on Friday.

He said Abdul Aziz, an onion trader from Dangamari village in Santhia upazila, went missing on September 7. His body was found floating in a local pond the following day.

According to the SRB official, the assailants allegedly hacked Aziz with sharp weapons, slit his throat and dumped his body in the pond.

A murder case was filed with Santhia Police Station by a relative of the victim. Police later identified four suspects, two of whom were arrested and sent to jail. They were also taken on three-day remand for questioning.

The SRB said the four suspects were involved in the murder and that Bagha was the alleged mastermind. He had reportedly been changing his location to evade law enforcement.

The SRB later traced his location to Narsingdi using information technology and arrested him from Madhabdi on Thursday.

According to Intekhab Chowdhury, Bagha told investigators during preliminary questioning that he was the leader of a banned Sarbahara group and that the four had planned the murder for Tk 25,000.

Bagha was handed over to Santhia Police Station for further legal action, the SRB official said.
