Prime Minister’s Political Assistant Rashed Khan has alleged that Jamaat-e-Islami has taken control of Rangpur with the support of the interim government.

He made the allegation while speaking to journalists after visiting the Shaheed Abu Sayeed Memorial and the site where Abu Sayeed was killed at Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur around 11:00 AM on Friday.

Rashed alleged that the administrative setup in Rangpur and Khulna divisions had been arranged in favour of Jamaat ahead of the election so that Jamaat candidates would be declared winners even if voters cast their ballots for BNP candidates.

He also referred to claims by Jamaat that the election had been manipulated, saying its Ameer had nevertheless accepted the results.

Rashed said BNP has a strong organisational presence in Rangpur. He claimed that, considering the party's organisational strength, candidates and popularity, it would not be surprising if BNP candidates lost all six parliamentary seats in Rangpur.
