Dengue hospitalisations cross 60,000, death toll reaches 178

A total of 1,232 people were hospitalised with dengue in the past 24 hours, taking the number of hospitalised patients in Bangladesh this year to 60,379.

Two more people died of the mosquito-borne disease, raising the death toll to 178 this year, according to data from the Directorate General of Health Services’ Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room on Saturday.

Of the 178 deaths, 52 per cent were women and 48 per cent were men.

According to the monthly breakdown, two people died each in January and February, while there were no deaths in March and April. One person died in May and 13 in June. The death toll rose to 36 in July and 43 in August.

The situation has deteriorated sharply this month, with 81 deaths recorded so far in September. The highest single-day death toll was nine, recorded on September 8.

In Dhaka division, 53 people died at hospitals under the Dhaka South City Corporation, 23 at hospitals under the Dhaka North City Corporation and 10 outside the city corporations.

The deaths included 32 in Khulna, 18 in Mymensingh, 13 in Barishal, 16 in Chattogram, eight in Rajshahi, four in Rangpur and one in Sylhet.

According to the monthly figures, 24,533 people have been hospitalised with dengue so far this month. The number was 20,536 in August.

Earlier, 1,081 people were hospitalised in January, 409 in February, 353 in March, 640 in April, 714 in May, 2,907 in June and 9,206 in July.

So far, 56,070 dengue patients have been discharged from hospitals.
