Sadiq Kayem calls for home minister’s resignation

Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President Sadiq Kayem has called for the resignation of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, expressing dissatisfaction over the country’s law and order situation.

He made the demand in a Facebook post on Saturday, referring to the killing of 13-year-old child Oprotima in Cumilla.

In the post, Sadiq said the discovery of Oprotima’s body would leave any conscientious person speechless. He questioned whether the incidents were affecting the conscience of the minister responsible for maintaining law and order in the country.

Criticising the home minister, Sadiq alleged that he was busy handling responsibilities on behalf of the prime minister or interfering in the affairs of other ministries. He also alleged that the minister was focused on appointing his son and relatives to government projects and lucrative positions despite their lack of experience.

Sadiq further alleged that killings and rape incidents had continued since the BNP government took office, leaving women, children and elderly people unsafe.

Referring to the recovery of the bodies of an expatriate and his wife and daughter in Manikganj on Saturday, he described Salahuddin Ahmed as the “most unsuccessful minister” of the government.

“We did not want this kind of Bangladesh,” Sadiq said, adding that they had fought in the July 2024 movement to ensure the safety of people’s lives and property.

“If the government cannot ensure that security, the home minister should resign, taking responsibility for his failure while there is still time. This is the public demand,” he said.
