Two passenger buses were targeted in separate fire incidents in Dhaka’s Mirpur area on Saturday evening, with police saying an attempt was made to set fire to one of them.
A bus of Shikhar Paribahan was reportedly set on fire around 7:15 PM in Mirpur-11, according to sources. It was not immediately known whether any passengers were on board. No casualties or injuries were reported.
Another bus of Abhijat Paribahan was reportedly set on fire at Mirpur-1 intersection around the same time.
However, Mirpur Police Station OC Hafizur Rahman said there had been an attempt to set fire to a bus, but it did not catch fire.
A video showed flames at the rear of the bus, while several people were seen trying to put them out with water.
The Fire Service, however, said it had no information about a bus fire at the location.
“We are working to identify those who tried to set fire to the bus,” the OC said.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies have tightened security across the capital following the recent incidents. According to DMP sources, more than 200 checkpoints are being operated at strategic locations, while special surveillance has been placed at four major entry and exit points of Dhaka.
