Bangladeshi youth dies on way to Greece as boat sinks

A 23-year-old man from Bhairab in Kishoreganj died after a boat carrying migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea while he was travelling from Libya to Greece in pursuit of a better life in Europe.

The boat carrying the migrants sank at around 11:00 PM on September 14 after getting into an accident. His family later learned of his death through a broker, but his body has not yet been recovered.

The deceased was identified as Bayzid Chowdhury, son of Sub Mia of Adarshapara village under Kalikaprasad Union in Bhairab.

According to family, Bayzid had travelled to Libya some time ago along with two other youths from the area. On September 14, he set out from Libya for Greece on a boat with several other prospective migrants.

The boat sank after encountering an accident in the Mediterranean during the journey, drowning Bayzid.

Bhairab Upazila Nirbahi Officer KM Mamunur Rashid said, "he had learned about Bayzid’s death in the boat sinking off Libya. He added that necessary assistance would be provided if the family wanted to bring the body back to Bangladesh"
