PM attends 10 programs on first day in US: Mahdi

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman attended 10 of 12 scheduled programs on the first day of his four-day visit to the United States to join the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), said Prime Minister’s Adviser and PMO spokesperson Mahdi Amin.

Briefing reporters at the Bangladesh Permanent Mission to the UN in New York on Tuesday (September 22, US time) evening, Mahdi said the day’s engagements covered multilateral, regional and bilateral issues, including the Rohingya crisis, regional cooperation and development. The prime minister could not attend two programs in person due to time constraints.

Tarique began the day by attending a breakfast hosted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres for heads of delegation and their spouses before joining the opening session of the UN General Assembly’s high-level General Debate. He later attended a dinner hosted by US President Donald Trump.

During the day, the prime minister held bilateral meetings with the prime ministers of Bhutan and Haiti, the vice-president of the Maldives and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Discussions included regional cooperation, tourism, education, healthcare, peacekeeping and bilateral relations.

The Rohingya crisis was also discussed in meetings with UN officials, while a meeting with the World Bank focused on areas including education, health, employment, investment, trade and development cooperation, according to Mahdi.

Mahdi said the first day’s engagements reflected what he described as the government’s “360-degree diplomatic and economic strategy”, with public interests and Bangladesh’s international standing receiving priority.
