Marion Cotillard says AI ‘acts like a potato’

Oscar-winning French actress Marion Cotillard has voiced her concerns about the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in cinema, joking that AI currently “acts like a potato.”

Speaking at the San Sebastian International Film Festival in Spain, Cotillard said she would be frightened if an AI actor could one day move her emotionally or make her cry.

“I would be really scared the day I watch an AI actor and feel something or cry. But for now, seeing them act like potatoes gives me some relief,” she said.

However, the 50-year-old actress admitted that AI is developing rapidly and said the possibility of artificial actors genuinely affecting audiences worries her.

The debate over AI in cinema has intensified following discussions around Tilly Norwood, described as the world’s first AI star.
