60 maunds of hilsa sold for Tk 20 lakh

A fishing trawler returned to Hatiya in Noakhali with around 60 maunds of hilsa caught in the Bay of Bengal.

The trawler, carrying nearly 8,000 hilsa, reached Chairman Ghat on Thursday morning after spending six days at sea with 18 fishermen.

The fish were sold in three auction rounds at Saiful Fish Arat by noon for around Tk 20 lakh.

Local fishermen and traders expressed excitement over the large catch, saying continued abundance of hilsa could boost fishermen’s incomes and benefit local markets.

Noakhali District Fisheries Officer Harun-or-Rashid said hilsa availability in the sea was good, but urged fishermen to protect jatka and follow fishing bans to increase hilsa production and breeding.
