Grandmother and daughter die after wasp attack in Mymensingh

A grandmother and her five-year-old granddaughter died after being attacked by a swarm of wasps in Mymensingh’s Fulbaria upazila on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Sumri Begum, 62, wife of Abdul Motaleb of Badihati Paschimpara village, and her granddaughter Adiba, 5.

Adiba lived at her grandparents’ home as her mother works at a garment factory in Dhaka.

According to Manjurul Haque, a member of Ward No. 3 of Naogaon Union Parishad, a wasp nest had formed on the bank of a pond beside Motaleb’s house, but the family was unaware of it.

Adiba went to the pond bank in the morning when a swarm of wasps attacked her. Seeing this, her grandmother rushed to rescue her, but the wasps also attacked Sumri Begum.

Adiba died at the scene after being stung. Relatives rescued Sumri and took her to the upazila health complex, where she died while undergoing treatment around 3:30 PM.

The bodies of the two victims were kept at their home, and preparations for their burial were underway, the local UP member said.
