Bangladesh will not send hilsa to India for Durga Puja this year

Bangladesh will not send hilsa to India for the upcoming Durga Puja, while the country has imported around 500 tonnes of hilsa from India this year to meet domestic demand.

Bangladesh usually allows hilsa exports to India around mid-September ahead of the festival. However, the deadline has passed this year and the relevant permissions have been cancelled, leaving traders with no opportunity to send the fish.

The opportunity has also narrowed as the fishing ban on hilsa in Bangladesh is approaching.

The development comes as hilsa production in Bangladesh has declined somewhat this year. To meet domestic demand, the country has instead imported hilsa from India, particularly Gujarat. The fish, which reportedly contain a large amount of roe, are in high demand among buyers in Chattogram and Sylhet.

Bangladesh has generally kept hilsa exports to India suspended since 2012. However, the restriction was relaxed for a few days during Durga Puja every year from 2019, including after the country's political transition.

That practice has not been followed this year, meaning Indian consumers are unlikely to receive Bangladeshi Padma hilsa during Durga Puja.
