Bangladesh records 146 elephant deaths in nine years

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Abdul Awal Mintu has said the government will take coordinated measures to ensure safe coexistence between humans and elephants.

He made the remarks at a discussion titled “Elephant Conservation: Existing Challenges and Way Forward” at the Tourism Building in Agargaon, Dhaka, on Saturday.

According to Forest Department data, Bangladesh had an estimated 268 elephants in 2016, while 146 elephants died between 2016 and 2025.

The minister said shrinking habitats and movement corridors, deforestation, food shortages, infrastructure development, climate change and electric traps were increasing human-elephant conflicts.

He said the government would strengthen measures to protect elephant habitats and corridors, identify conflict-prone areas, introduce early warning systems and improve rapid response mechanisms.

The discussion was jointly organised by BELA, IUCN Bangladesh, Creative Conservation Alliance, Aranyak and Deep Ecology and Snake Conservation Foundation.
