BGB receives century old ancient stone pillar

Local residents handed over part of an 8th-to-9th-century sandstone pillar to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) to prevent the smuggling of archaeological artifacts.

The ancient relic weighs 320 kg and has an estimated value of Tk 1.60 crore.

The stone was handed over to the Joypurhat Battalion (20 BGB) on Friday (26 September). Archeological Department officials later verified the item and certified it as part of an 8th-to-9th-century sandstone pillar.

According to a BGB press release, local people decided to hand over the stone to preserve the country's historical heritage and prevent smuggling. Following permission from proper authorities, a BGB patrol team went to the designated spot and took custody of the relic.
