Bomb scare near US airbase in UK, several arrested

Several homes were evacuated and a number of people were arrested following a bomb scare near a US military airbase in Gloucestershire, UK, on Sunday.

Gloucestershire Police said its Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was examining several vehicles at the scene. An emergency response was also declared.

Residents of several homes in Welford, near RAF Fairford, were evacuated and taken to a nearby leisure centre as a precaution.

Armed police blocked roads leading to the main entrance of the airbase, while around 30 emergency vehicles, including police cars, ambulances and fire engines, were deployed in the area.

RAF Fairford is used by the US military and has been involved in US operations related to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Police have not yet disclosed why the suspects were arrested, whether any explosives were found or whether there was an attempt to carry out an attack targeting the airbase.

The US Air Force said it was aware of the incident.
