Saudi Arabia keeps nuclear weapons option open

Saudi Arabia has kept open the option of developing nuclear weapons, according to a classified US intelligence assessment, amid growing scrutiny over its expanding nuclear cooperation with Washington.

On Sunday (September 27), the assessment said Riyadh has not ruled out pursuing a nuclear weapons capability, although it does not indicate that Saudi Arabia has decided to build such weapons.

The development comes as Saudi Arabia seeks to expand its civilian nuclear programme, including uranium enrichment capabilities, under a proposed agreement with the United States. Washington has said it does not support a Saudi nuclear weapons programme.

Riyadh has repeatedly maintained that its nuclear ambitions are for peaceful purposes. The intelligence assessment does not establish that Saudi Arabia is currently developing nuclear weapons, and its classified details have not been made public.
