Tk 7 lakh robbed by men posing as DB police in Bhanga

A businessman was allegedly robbed of Tk 7 lakh by men posing as Detective Branch (DB) police in Bhanga, Faridpur, on Sunday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 1:30 PM in the Charabattala area on the Faridpur-Bhanga-Khulna highway.

According to police, locals and the victim's family, Mehedi Hasan withdrew Tk 7 lakh from his account at Pubali Bank's Bhanga branch to buy land. He then left for his home in Munsurabad village in an auto-rickshaw carrying the money in a bag.

When the auto-rickshaw reached Charabattala, a white private car blocked its way. Four men in the car introduced themselves as DB police and accused Hasan of being involved in drug dealing. They handcuffed him.

When he shouted, they allegedly beat him, covered his face with a cloth and forcibly took him into the car. They then allegedly threatened him with a weapon, put a mask over his face and rendered him unconscious.

Hasan said he was rescued unconscious from a bush in the Puliya Gabtali area of the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway about three and a half hours later by local people. He was first taken to Bhanga Police Station and later admitted to Bhanga Upazila Health Complex.

Faridpur District DB Police Officer-in-Charge Md Shahidul Islam said no DB team went to Bhanga for any official purpose on Sunday. He said he learned about the incident from journalists.

Bhanga Police Station Sub-Inspector Khaled Hossain said the robbers, posing as DB police, handcuffed the victim and took a large sum of money from him. Police are investigating the incident and efforts are underway to identify those responsible.
