Ex-law minister’s sister-in-law’s bank account frozen

A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered the freezing of a bank account belonging to Jebunnesa Begum Haque, wife of former law minister Anisul Haque’s younger brother, in a corruption case.

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Shahjahan Kabir passed the order following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

According to the ACC, Anisul Haque and other accused allegedly acquired Tk146.19 crore in assets disproportionate to their known sources of income between 2014 and 2024. They also allegedly made suspicious transactions involving 29 bank accounts, with Tk349.15 crore deposited and Tk316.49 crore withdrawn.

The ACC said its investigation found information on Tk172.24 crore in unexplained assets allegedly held by Anisul Haque, Mohammad Iqbal, Sheikh Md Iftekharul Islam and Jebunnesa.

The agency also said Tk375.51 crore was deposited and Tk361.73 crore withdrawn through 23 bank accounts linked to the accused.

The ACC told the court that the account needed to be frozen to prevent the withdrawal, transfer or disposal of funds and to safeguard the assets for possible recovery by the state.
