A 74-year-old man was killed after being hit by an auto-rickshaw in Hizla upazila of Barishal on Thursday night.
The deceased was identified as Abdul Malek Sikdar, son of late Nader Ali Sikdar of Ward No. 6 in Maskata village of the upazila. He worked as a labourer in betel leaf gardens.
The accident occurred around 9:00 PM in the Golerhat area.
According to locals, Abdul Malek was returning home on foot after finishing work when a speeding auto-rickshaw heading towards Kauria from Khunna Bazar hit him near Golerhat.
He fell onto the road and sustained serious injuries to his head.
Locals rescued him and took him to Hizla Upazila Health Complex. As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal, where he died while undergoing treatment around 1:30 AM.
Confirming the incident, Hizla Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Solaiman said police visited the scene after being informed and seized the auto-rickshaw involved in the accident.
However, no written complaint has yet been filed by the deceased’s family, he said, adding that legal action would be taken if a complaint is lodged.
