More than 700 protesters were detained in Delhi on Friday as various political and student organisations demonstrated at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.

The protesters gathered to raise allegations of irregularities and mass deletion of names during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

To control the situation, telecom operators were directed to suspend internet services at Jantar Mantar and within a 1.5-kilometre radius from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Friday, according to Hindustan Times.

Police said permission had not been granted for the demonstration. Around 700 protesters had been detained from Jantar Mantar and nearby areas by the time the reports were filed.

Members of the All India Students’ Association (AISA), Students’ Federation of India (SFI), National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) and other groups took part in the protests. Former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi and other political leaders were also detained.

The internet suspension came three months after similar restrictions were imposed around Jantar Mantar during protests over the alleged NEET question paper leak.
