South African coach Malibongwe Maketa has been named as the new assistant coach of the Bangladesh men’s national cricket team on a two-year contract, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) said on Friday (October 2).
The contract will run from October 2026 to November 2028, and Maketa will join the national team ahead of the Test series against Afghanistan in the UAE.
The 46-year-old holds a Level 4 coaching qualification from Cricket South Africa and has more than two decades of coaching experience.
Maketa has worked with the South African national team, A team, Under-19 side and National Academy, besides serving as head coach of domestic franchise Warriors.
He was an assistant coach of the South Africa men’s national team from 2017 to 2019 and was part of the coaching staff at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.
He has also worked with South Africa during Test and ODI series against India, Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Maketa has earned a reputation for developing young players through his work with the South African National Academy and Under-19 team. Under his guidance, the South Africa Emerging team recently won the CSA One-Day Cup Division 2 title, while the Under-19 side reached the semi-finals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup.
Maketa said he was delighted to accept the offer and grateful to the BCB for trusting him. He said he looked forward to working with head coach Phil Simmons and the coaching staff to improve the players’ technical and mental skills.
