Canada's Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has called for national unity ahead of Alberta's October 19 referendum, saying the province's grievances should be addressed within Canada rather than through separation.
Speaking in Edmonton, Poilievre said many Albertans' concerns over the cost of living, housing, energy development and federal intervention were legitimate, but argued that separation would not resolve them.
He said changes to federal policies and stronger provincial powers could help address Alberta's concerns while keeping the province within Canada.
The October 19 referendum will include 10 questions. The 10th asks whether Alberta should remain a Canadian province or whether the government should begin the legal process required to hold a future binding referendum on separation.
Poilievre has said he wants Alberta to remain part of a united Canada, while Alberta Premier Danielle Smith has also stated that she supports keeping the province within Canada while seeking stronger provincial powers.
