Detective Branch (DB) police have handed over Jamaat leader and former army major Akhteruzzaman Ranjan to Airport Police Station following his arrest over allegations of threatening the executive director of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport and assaulting a security supervisor.
He was handed over to the police station around 7:15 PM on Friday, Airport Police Station Officer-in-Charge Kamrul Hasan Talukder confirmed.
“The DB handed Akhteruzzaman over to the police station. Legal proceedings are under way,” the OC said.
Police said Akhteruzzaman will be questioned in a case filed with Airport Police Station for obstructing government duties. The station’s investigators will handle the investigation and further legal proceedings.
Akhteruzzaman was arrested earlier on Friday evening in a case filed over allegations of creating disorder at the airport over a shortage of luggage trolleys, obstructing government duties and assault. DB chief Shafiqul Islam confirmed his arrest that evening.
Earlier on Friday, airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib filed the case against Akhteruzzaman at Airport Police Station.
According to the case statement, passengers faced delays in receiving luggage from a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight, BG-338, arriving from Madinah on Thursday amid heavy passenger pressure. The passengers became agitated over the delay.
When airport executive director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad went to the scene to control the situation, Akhteruzzaman allegedly abused him and threatened to assault him after pushing him by the neck and ordering him to leave, according to the statement. He was also accused of making offensive remarks about the aviation minister.
The statement further said people accompanying Akhteruzzaman began recording videos in a restricted area of the airport. When security supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin stopped them, Akhteruzzaman allegedly abused and physically assaulted him.
He was also accused of throwing bottles of Zamzam water at passengers and behaving aggressively towards a representative of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
A case was filed against Akhteruzzaman under several sections of the Penal Code on allegations of obstructing government duties, assault and intimidation. The incident is being investigated based on CCTV footage and witness statements.
Akhteruzzaman, a former BNP leader, was expelled from the party several times for violating party discipline. He joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on December 13, 2025.
