Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and opposition leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman has called for the immediate release of Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman and withdrawal of what he described as a “fabricated” case against him.
In a Facebook post on Friday (October 2) night, Shafiqur said the allegations that Akhtaruzzaman physically assaulted anyone were false and condemned his arrest.
He said two airport officials had been temporarily suspended following the incident, which he cited as evidence of irregularities and mismanagement at the airport.
According to Shafiqur, Akhtaruzzaman had protested against passenger harassment, neglect of returning expatriate Bangladeshis and other alleged irregularities at the airport.
He said passengers present at the airport were witnesses to the problems Akhtaruzzaman had protested against.
Shafiqur warned that if Akhtaruzzaman's arrest was intended to suppress allegations of irregularities and passenger harassment at the airport, the move would not be accepted by the affected public.
