Former army major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman said he would continue his “struggle” for people's rights in a video message posted on social media shortly before DB police arrested him on Friday (October 2).
In the video, Akhtaruzzaman said DB police were taking him into custody and asked people to pray for him.
“I am with the struggle for people's rights and will remain so for the rest of my life,” he said, adding that he would continue to stand by the people and particularly work to protect the interests of expatriate Bangladeshis.
He also said he was ready to sacrifice his life for the people and ended the message by wishing everyone well.
Akhtaruzzaman was arrested by Detective Branch (DB) police over allegations of creating disorder, obstructing government work and assaulting people at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. DB chief Shafiqul Islam confirmed his arrest on Friday evening.
Earlier on Friday, airport security officer Md Shahriar Alam Sajib filed a case against him at Airport Police Station over the allegations.
According to the case statement, passengers became agitated on Thursday (October 1) after delays in receiving luggage from Biman flight BG-338 from Medina amid heavy passenger pressure.
The airport's Executive Director Group Captain SM Ragib Samad went to the spot to control the situation. The case statement alleges that Akhtaruzzaman verbally abused him and threatened to assault him and force him out of the airport.
It further alleges that Akhtaruzzaman's associates filmed in a restricted area and that he verbally abused and physically assaulted security supervisor Warrant Officer Mohammad Kamal Uddin when he tried to stop them.
The case also alleges that he threw Zamzam water bottles and behaved aggressively with a Biman Bangladesh Airlines representative.
Akhtaruzzaman faces charges under several sections of the Penal Code over allegations of obstructing government work, assault and intimidation. The allegations are part of the case and have not been independently verified.
