Russia has carried out a strike on Kyiv’s Northern Bridge, the second major bridge in the Ukrainian capital to come under attack in recent days, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko.
The attack took place on Saturday morning, damaging part of the bridge’s roadway and trolleybus power lines. Vehicle traffic on the bridge has been suspended.
In a message on Telegram, Klitschko said emergency services were heading to the scene and that the route from the left bank to the right bank had been temporarily closed.
The attack came days after Russia also targeted Kyiv’s Southern Bridge, or Pivdennyi Bridge, with drones. Metro and vehicle traffic on that bridge has remained suspended following several attacks on Thursday and Friday.
The Northern and Southern bridges are important transport links between the eastern and western parts of Kyiv. The attacks have disrupted movement in the capital, where many residents rely on the metro to travel across the city.
Russia’s Defence Ministry confirmed the strike on the Northern Bridge, claiming that it was used to transport troops, military equipment and supplies. The ministry also claimed to have struck a logistics centre in Kyiv.
However, Klitschko did not mention any logistics centre in his comments on the Northern Bridge attack.
Following the earlier attack on the Southern Bridge, Kyiv’s Defence Council held an emergency meeting on Friday. Klitschko said the city was facing a serious situation and accused Russia of targeting critical infrastructure, logistics facilities, residential areas and other important sites.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Moscow’s actions are in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. Kyiv and Moscow have issued conflicting accounts of the continuing attacks on infrastructure.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Russia of attempting to destroy critical infrastructure in Ukraine, including bridges, data centres, communications networks, hospitals, schools and universities.
Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
