The government has taken an initiative to upgrade existing 50-bed hospitals to 151-bed facilities, Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain said on Saturday.

He made the remarks after an unannounced visit to Patiya Upazila Health Complex in Chattogram.

The minister said the Patiya health complex would be developed into a model hospital to ensure healthcare for people in the wider area. Hospitals in areas where there is a need but no existing facility will also be considered for new 151-bed hospitals.

During the visit, he inspected different departments and spoke to patients about the quality of healthcare. He also reviewed doctors’ attendance, biomedical services, diagnostic facilities, medicine and saline supplies, and the quality of food provided to inpatients.

He instructed the authorities to arrange necessary blood tests at the hospital and ensure adequate supplies of medicines and saline, as well as improve the quality of food for patients.

Hospital authorities said more than 1,000 patients receive treatment in the outpatient department every day, while 100 to 150 patients are admitted daily.

The minister was accompanied by Chattogram-12 lawmaker Enamul Haque Enam and Divisional Director (Health) Dr Sheikh Fazle Rabbi, among others.
