The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has conducted simultaneous raids on four bars in Dhaka over allegations of sourcing alcohol and alcoholic products illegally, evading customs duties, VAT and income tax, and supplying such products to unauthorised customers.
The establishments are RA W Canvas Restaurant, Habib Hotel International, Margarita Lounge and Fu-Wang Bowling and Services Ltd. The owner of Fu-Wang Bowling and Services Ltd is Sheikh Nur Islam, the father-in-law of YouTuber Salman Muqtadir.
The special operation was conducted on Saturday by several agencies under the NBR, according to the NBR's public relations office.
The Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) formed four teams for the operation. Officials from the NBR's Income Tax Intelligence and Investigation Unit, Central Intelligence Cell, VAT Audit, Intelligence and Investigation Directorate, and Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Dhaka (North), also joined the teams.
Officials are inspecting the establishments, conducting searches, checking documents and, where necessary, seizing products. They are examining the quantity of alcohol and alcoholic products in stock, their sources, import and purchase documents, payment of applicable customs duties, VAT and income tax, and the legality of the products.
The NBR said further action would be taken under the law if evidence of irregularities or revenue evasion is found.
Earlier, the CIID said alcohol had been found in two unauthorised warehouses outside the approved warehouse of TOS Bond Pvt Ltd, a diplomatic bonded warehouse linked to Sheikh Nur Islam. The agency also said all four warehouses of the company had been sealed.
According to intelligence officials, TOS Bond supplies duty-free alcohol to foreign diplomats. The company had been under investigation for several months following allegations that duty-free products were being sold on the open market.
On September 30, the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) sought information on the bank accounts and transaction details of Salman Mohammad Muqtadir.
