A mobile court seized around 50,000 cubic feet of sand during a drive along the Shitalakshya River in Gazipur on Tuesday.

The drive was conducted on the riverbank adjacent to Jamuna Spacetech Joint Venture Limited in the Barihati area of Tumlia Union under Kaliganj Upazila.

The operation was led by Al-Amin Haldar, assistant commissioner (land) and executive magistrate of Kaliganj.

According to mobile court sources, sand was being stockpiled and used for filling the riverside area without the required permits. The authorities seized the sand during the drive and handed it over to the custody of the Union Land Assistant Officer.

A case, numbered 198/2026, was filed in connection with the incident under the Sand Quarry and Soil Management Act.

Acting Land Assistant Officer Md Tajul Islam, Land Sub-Assistant Officer Mohammad Sakhawat Hossain and Bench Assistant Mahbubul Islam were present during the operation.

Executive Magistrate Al-Amin Haldar said drives against unauthorized activities, including illegal sand filling, would continue to protect the river and its banks.
