Shoes were hung on Bir Sreshtho Hamidur Rahman’s statue at the central bus terminal area in Jhenaidah on Tuesday (October 6), sparking criticism after a photo of the incident went viral on social media.
The unfinished statue had a garland of shoes hung around its head. The garland was later removed by people sent by the district freedom fighters’ council.
District freedom fighters’ council convenor Kamaluzzaman Kamal said he was informed of the incident around 10:30AM. He condemned the act as a grave insult to the nation’s war heroes and called for an investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
An emergency meeting was held at the deputy commissioner’s office in the evening, attended by officials of the district administration and police, freedom fighters, political leaders and civil society representatives.
The meeting decided to bring those involved to justice, install CCTV cameras at the site and reconstruct Hamidur Rahman’s statue properly with the help of a skilled architect, Kamaluzzaman said.
Jhenaidah Sadar Police Station OC Asaduzzaman said he had heard about the incident from journalists but had no further information or update.
Deputy Commissioner Noman Hossain said the incident was regrettable and police had been instructed to investigate and take legal action against those responsible.
Hamidur Rahman’s nephew Hafizur Rahman called for a proper investigation, saying someone might have planned the incident to erase memories of Hamidur Rahman and the Liberation War.
