Life imprisonment for drilling victim to death

A court in Naogaon has sentenced Sohel Rana alias Hanif to life imprisonment in the murder case of Kohinur Begum alias Fahima. He was also fined Tk 5 lakh, in default of which he will serve an additional two years of simple imprisonment.
The sentence was handed down for killing the victim by drilling a hole in her head with a drilling machine.
Raju Ahmed, Judge of the Additional Sessions Judge Court-2 in Naogaon, announced the verdict in open court on Tuesday ( October 6) afternoon.
According to the case details and court sources, Kohinur Begum was alone at home on the afternoon of September 11, 2019, while her husband was away on business. Sohel Rana, who was a family acquaintance and a close associate, used to visit the house regularly. Taking advantage of the situation, he entered the house on the day of the incident.
He then drilled Kohinur’s head with a drilling machine, causing severe injuries, and subsequently fled with cash and gold ornaments.
Kohinur was later found inside the house in a critically injured condition with severe head injuries. She died while undergoing treatment. Following a case filed by the victim’s relatives, an investigation was conducted and a charge sheet was submitted to the court naming Sohel Rana as the accused.
Advocate Mahfuz Alam Khan, Additional Public Prosecutor (APP) of Naogaon, represented the state in the case. He said the court reviewed various pieces of evidence, including witness testimonies, medical reports, the victim’s prior acquaintance with the accused and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The verdict noted that the evidence established beyond reasonable doubt the murder charge brought against Sohel Rana under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
He added that the court convicted Sohel Rana alias Hanif and sentenced him to life imprisonment and a fine of Tk 5 lakh. The court also ordered that the fine, if collected, be paid to the plaintiff as compensation.
Following the announcement of the verdict, the convict was sent to jail with a warrant of commitment.
