Oscar-winning actress Eva Marie Saint has died at the age of 102. She died at her home in Los Angeles on Tuesday (October 6) due to age-related causes, according to the BBC.
Saint made her big-screen debut in Elia Kazan’s 1954 crime drama On the Waterfront, starring opposite Marlon Brando. Her performance as Edie Doyle earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
She went on to star opposite Cary Grant in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1959 thriller North by Northwest, playing Eve Kendall, a mysterious woman who draws the film’s protagonist into a dangerous situation.
Although Saint was considered an unexpected choice for the Hitchcock film, her performance became one of the best-known roles of her career. She later appeared alongside Paul Newman in Exodus and Warren Beatty in All Fall Down.
Saint eventually stepped away from acting to focus on her family. She was married to director Jeffrey Hayden for 65 years until his death in 2016.
She returned to the big screen in 2006 with Superman Returns, playing Martha Kent, Superman’s adoptive mother. She later appeared in Winter’s Tale and Mariette in Ecstasy.
Saint had two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Before her death, she was the oldest living Oscar-winning actress and one of the last surviving stars associated with Hollywood’s golden age.
She is survived by her two children.
